The Wikidata Query Service offers the ability to run complex queries on the Wikidata knowledge graph. As graph database platform, Blazegraph has been selected by the Wikimedia Foundation for the implementation of the Wikidata Query Service.

In this presentation, we report on experiences in implementing the Wikidata Query Service with Blazegraph and explain how some of the features and capabilities of Blazegraph are utilized for Wikidata. We also showcase applications built using the Wikidata Query Service.

Peter has founded metaphacts in October 2014. He has 20+ years of IT experience, with 14+ years in semantic technologies, in academia as well as in industry. In 2006, Peter obtained his PhD from the University of Karlsruhe (now KIT) under the supervision of Prof. Rudi Studer. Lastly, he worked as Head of Research and Development at fluid Operations AG. Previously, he also worked for IBM in the Silicon Valley Labs in the development team of DB2, as well as for the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics. Peter has acquired and managed numerous large research projects and also led the development of commercial products and solutions in the area of semantic technologies.

Mr. Bryan Thompson is Chief Scientist at SYSTAP. He has 30+ years experience as a technologist, inventor and researcher in cloud computing and big data. He is the lead architect for BlazeGraph®, an open source distributed graph database used by Fortune 500 companies, including EMC, Autodesk, and Yahoo!. He leads SYSTAP’s research team investigating GPU-accelerated distributed architectures for graph processing, which, together with the SCI Institute, in 2014 first published results for executing Breadth-First Search on a cluster of 64 GPUs at up to 30 billion traversed edges per second. He has over 30 years experience related to cloud computing; graph databases; the semantic web; web architecture; relational, object, and RDF database architectures; knowledge management and collaboration; artificial intelligence and connectionist models; natural language processing; metrics, scalability studies, benchmarks and performance tuning; decision support systems.

Stanislav Malyshev is a Senior Software Engineer at Wikimedia Foundation, working on creation of the Wikidata Query Service. He has more than two decades of experience developing software in a variety of platforms and languages, recently specializing on Web Services. He is also an active contributor to the PHP project.
